The Swarthy Crown: The Erased Portraits of European Royalty. Watch the series opener.

Series Opener

Forgotten empires. Erased rulers. Primary records they thought you’d never read.

You’ve seen their portraits in gold frames hanging quietly in museum galleries: fair kings, fair queens, polished and sanitized. But the real story doesn’t live in modern oil paintings, it lives in the physical ink of the primary court records.

So that is where I went.

A painting is an artistic interpretation. A court description is eyewitness testimony. And when you read the records written by the very people who stood in those royal chambers, the faces change completely.

Welcome to The Swarthy Crown: The Erased Portraits of European Royalty. Ten episodes. Primary text first, art second.

The King's Sons

Last week, I pulled open the secret notebooks of John Macky, Queen Anne’s top intelligence agent in the 1700s. Look at the exact testimony he left behind.

Macky records that Charles, Duke of St. Albans, direct son to King Charles II, was:

"of a Black Complexion, not so tall as the Duke of Northumberland, yet very like King Charles." (Macky, Memoirs, p. 40).

He looks at another son, the Duke of Richmond:

"Black Complexion, much like King Charles."

He examines a grandson, the Duke of Grafton:

"A tall Black Man, about Twenty-five Years old."

Two sons and a grandson of the exact same monarch. The exact same primary terms, recorded over and over by crown intelligence: Black Complexion. Very like King Charles.

The Black Prince of Man

Go north, and step back several hundred years. In 1884, antiquarian David MacRitchie traced the ancient MacLeods of Skye back to their founder, Leod, identified directly as the "son to the black prince of Man."

MacRitchie names him explicitly:

"Olafr Svarti, or Olave the Swarthy... who was King of Man during the thirteenth century." (MacRitchie, Ancient and Modern Britons, Vol. I, p. 116).

A crowned king of the Isles: Olave the Swarthy.

Cross over to Norway, and the royal sagas record the father of King Harald using the exact same primary terminology: "Halfdan the Black." In Egil's Saga, the royal lineage is laid down plain: "Harold, son of Halfdan Swarthy."

Where the Series Begins: King Arthur

Episode 1 goes straight to the oldest surviving manuscripts that name Arthur. Long before Victorian painters put brush to canvas, there was the Historia Brittonum:

"Then it was, that the magnanimous Arthur, with all the kings and military force of Britain, fought against the Saxons. And though there were many more noble than himself, yet he was twelve times chosen their commander, and was as often conqueror." (Historia Brittonum, sec. 56)

Twelve battles. A sacred cross carried at Badon for three days and three nights. A crown set upon his head at age fifteen.

I combed every single line of those early chronicles looking for the modern textbook image. It isn't there. If you picture Arthur fair-haired and fair-skinned, that picture came from 19th-century studio artists, not the ancient records.
